Welcome to Buttercup STEAM
At Buttercup STEAM Camp, we aim to inspire girls, particularly girls of color, to explore STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) through engaging, hands-on projects. Our week-long camps are designed to reduce gender and racial gaps in technology professions by providing an adventurous and memorable introduction to coding, robotics, and creative problem-solving.
Our Mission
We believe the experience of creating something functional—like an app or robot—can spark enthusiasm and propel girls to pursue further education and careers in STEAM fields. By fostering confidence and creativity, we empower girls to break barriers and succeed in male-dominated industries.
About Camp
Buttercup STEAM Camp is a week-long program for girls ages 8-14, offering beginner-friendly sessions where campers build confidence as they explore coding, robotics, and creative problem-solving in a fun, supportive environment.

The Future of STEAM for Girls and Women of Color
The future of STEAM relies on diversity, and Buttercup STEAM Camp is proud to play a role in shaping that future. By creating opportunities for Black and Latinx girls to engage in STEAM, we’re cultivating a new generation of leaders who will bring fresh perspectives and creative solutions to global challenges. Together, we can build a world where all girls, regardless of race or background, have the tools to succeed in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics.
Why Steampunk?
Steampunk is more than a theme—it’s an approach that merges history, creativity, and technology. By drawing inspiration from 19th-century industrial designs and retro-futuristic aesthetics, we spark curiosity and innovation in campers. Steampunk’s DIY spirit encourages Black and Latinx girls to see themselves as inventors and creators, blending artistry with technical skill to imagine a brighter future.
Steampunk combines 19th-century industrial aesthetics with futuristic concepts, inspiring creativity and innovation. This unique theme bridges art and science, encouraging campers to think outside the box and reimagine possibilities. |
Educational Standards and Compliance
Buttercup STEAM Camp’s curriculum aligns with nationally recognized standards for STEAM education, emphasizing hands-on learning, critical thinking, and collaboration. We prioritize inclusive teaching practices and culturally relevant content to ensure that Black and Latinx girls feel seen and supported. By adhering to these standards, we prepare campers to excel in academic and professional STEAM environments.

Buttercup STEAM Camp’s curriculum is carefully designed to align with nationally recognized educational standards, including:
- Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS):
We integrate NGSS principles by emphasizing hands-on, inquiry-based learning that encourages problem-solving, experimentation, and critical thinking. Activities like building robots or coding interactive apps help campers explore STEAM concepts in real-world contexts. - International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) Standards:
Our program ensures that campers develop key digital skills outlined by ISTE, including computational thinking, creativity, and collaboration. Campers engage in coding exercises, robotics challenges, and digital design projects that foster innovation and digital literacy. - National Core Arts Standards (NCAS):
As part of our STEAM approach, we incorporate artistic exploration to meet NCAS standards. Campers design visually engaging projects, blending creativity with technical problem-solving. - Common Core State Standards (CCSS) for Math and Literacy:
Activities are crafted to enhance mathematical reasoning, problem-solving, and communication skills. For example, campers use measurements and geometry in engineering projects or write presentations for their Friday showcase. - Culturally Relevant Pedagogy:
In addition to adhering to these formal standards, our curriculum is grounded in culturally relevant teaching practices. By incorporating examples and role models that resonate with Black and Latinx girls, we create a learning environment where all students feel empowered to succeed.
- Designing activities that promote collaboration, innovation, and real-world problem-solving.
- Offering age-appropriate, beginner-friendly tools that align with educational benchmarks.
- Using assessment methods to evaluate understanding and provide individualized feedback, helping campers meet learning objectives.
